چکیده

Relevance of meaning is deened to be a variable, aspect dependent relation of word-meaning and/or world-knowledge representations which form dynamic structures of semantic dispositions. These will be introduced to model the expectations which | other than the widely recognized linear/syntagmatic/ referential forms of text-connectedness (connexity/cohesion) | can be derived from the discourses' less accepted associative/paradigmatic/sense-relational properties, i.e. the more dynamic means of textuality (coherence). Involving interpreters' knowledge of word-meanings/world-structures activated, a procedure is given for the empirical reconstruction of their representation and relevant organisation. The notion of textuality has been the core domain of interest and research in textlinguistics for some time now. As such, it has widely become accepted to be analysable under mainly two aspects which allow to isolate sets of properties of essentially two kinds: those that can be observed to structure the linear arrangements of language elements, constituting a text-sequence's connexity and/or cohesion by more or less overt linguistic indicators, and those others that can be assigned only This paper presents some of the results of a project in Computational Semantics of the MESY-grant IV A 2-FA 8600 is concerned with the development of means for the automatic construction of fuzzy semantic and associative knowledge representation systems from natural language discourse input. Although central aspects have been reported in other papers in more detail, they had to be taken up in some parts here again in order to allow recent developments and conceptions which have been derived from them in view of textlinguistic problems to be understood in their proper context.

Inducing a Relevance Relation in a Distance-like Data Structure of Fuzzy Word Meaning Representation

Modelling representational systems for word meanings and/or world knowledge is a problem of mutual and complex relatedness. Different formats have been used with differing success among which that of stereotypical and/or prototypical meaning and knowledge representation appeared to be most adequate in view of how conceptual knowledge is made use of and/or new concepts are being conveyed. Under ...

Use of Cohesive Ties in English as a Foreign Language Students’ Writing

This study aims to understand certain linguistic and semantic resources for the text construction, namely the constructs of cohesion, coherence. The analysis of cohesive ties was conducted on the writing samples of 40 subjects (20 most coherent and 20 least coherent) Iranian undergraduates of English. This prompted us to identify the dominant types of cohesive devices used in most coherent writ...

This study explores Latent Semantic Analysis as a model of coherence relations in spoken discourse. Two studies were conducted on language data from six adult learners of English observed longitudinally for one year. The studies investigated whether LSA values increase as a function of time spent learning English and if there were links between negotiations for meaning and LSA values. Results s...

Representing discourse for automatic text summarization via shallow NLP techniques

In this thesis I have addressed the problem of text summarization from a linguistic perspective. After reviewing some work in the area, I have found that many satisfactory approaches to text summarization rely on general properties of language that are reflected in the surface realization of texts. The main claim of this thesis is that some general properties of the discursive organization of t...
